A senior stylist from Liverpool’s longest standing hair salon Voodou will be jetting off to the Big Apple after winning a national competition in association with leading professional haircare and colour brand, Redken.

Mum-of-one Megan Niccolls, 23, beat off stiff competition from hundreds of other hairdressers from all over the country to be named the #RedkenCityAwards winner, bagging herself a 3,306-mile trip to New York City to undertake a Colour Mastery Course at the heart of Redken’s Global Education – The Exchange on Fifth Avenue.

The competition encouraged participants to create an array of looks with Redken’s new ‘City Beats’ hair colour range, which comprises a spectrum of vivid colour for those who ‘dare to go bold’. With the help of her family, friends and clients, Megan’s pastel rainbow look entry sparked the attention of an impressive 4,000 ‘likers’ on social media in just four days, which lead to the win.

Megan, who has worked at Voodou for the past three years, said: “Rainbow colours are certainly my specialism so to be recognised across the country for what I do is so exciting and I still can’t believe I have won! As a business, we recently collaborated with Redken and I’ve loved using their products – it’s a match made in heaven due to our quirkiness and desire to be different. To be able to experiment, get creative and to be truly inspired to take part in the competition was fantastic.

“As a team, we’re noticing a salon-wide trend for experimental looks with colour, so the competition was very well timed; we see so many different looks every single day here in the salon! Winning the 2017 #RedkenCityAwards is certainly the highlight of my career within the hairdressing industry and I still can’t believe that in a matter of weeks, I’ll be jetting off to New York to be training with Redken’s top colour experts, learning new skills and bringing back a touch of NYC to the heart of Bold Street.”

With a trio of city-centre locations on Bold Street and Button Street and a suburban site in West Derby, Liverpool institution Voodou offers its customers the highest standards in hairdressing. Known for its unique approach to styling and impressive colour portfolio, the award-winning salon, which has been in business for more than 40 years, offers a range of services including cut, colour, styling and extensions to name a few.

Director of Voodou Rob Webb added: “What a fantastic achievement both for Megan and the Voodou collective as a whole! We’re so proud of our talented team members and not only will she enjoy an all-expenses-paid trip to the Big Apple, she’ll come back equipped with leading industry tips and tricks to continue to offer her clients the highest qualityin colour and pass on all that she has learnt to the rest of the team.

“The #RedkenCityAwards win is the icing on the cake of what has been an exciting year so far. It both reinforces our already prominent partnership with Redken and the fact that we like to invest and encourage our staff to be the best that they can be, whenever we can. Training is still at the core of everything we do and we pride ourselves on making sure our team are fully knowledgeable on all of the latest trends and products that the industry has to offer.”

We tend to invest a lot of money into our facial skincare often neglecting the body. Some habits are essential in order to care for your skin and have a radiant complexion all year long. If you have very dry skin that is prone to flakiness, try the Soothing Body Butter (£12.99) from Skinfix.

Fran Krenicki, head of product development at SkinFix, says:

– The richer the texture the more moisturizing and skin barrier building a formula is. The Soothing Body Butter goes above and beyond your regular lotion, but is easy to spread and absorbs quickly.

– This formula is great on the thickest, driest and roughest skin on the body, especially feet, heels, elbows and knees.

– We use organic Cupacau Butter from Brazil which is South America’s version of Shea Butter.  It’s loaded with anti-inflammatory properties and rich in omega fatty acids that nourish skin and protect skin.

– If you are super sensitive and have dry skin, this is the ultimate moisturizer.  It doesn’t have fragrance that can potentially irritate skin and is great for the whole family.

Another must have from Skinfix, Barrier Balm (£14.99)protects and soothes skin, creating a barrier against wetness and irritants that may cause chafing and rash. Helps to relieve the appearance of redness and irritation from razor burn and post waxing.

– A multi-tasking must have for every medicine cabinet.  This super rich balm protects against and helps tackle red rashy skin irritations all over the body, especially in the nooks and crannies.

– It’s packed with natural soothing ingredients like Zinc Oxide, Sunflower Oil, Jojoba Oil and Shea Butter that provide a protective soothing layer to irritated skin so it can heal properly.

– Avid runners love this formula to soothe post marathon chaffing on thighs, under arms and feet.

– This is a great alternative to hydrocortisone and steroid creams for those pesky rashes that pop up out of nowhere.

– Powder only absorbs moisture, but doesn’t do anything to protect or help heal skin that gets rashy.  Barrier Balm is an extra rich concentrated healing formula that is good for all skin types.

– Razor Burn or post wax red skin?  Barrier Balm soothes instantly and helps skin calm down.

– Itchy bug bites?  Dab a little on the hot spot to soothe and calm instantly.

What were your first steps in the beauty industry?

As a child, I always loved to draw and was fascinated by my mum’s magazines that contained images of ladies that had been completely transformed by a new hair style or the application of makeup, I used to sit for hours drawing people and creating hair and makeup styles for them. At 16 I trained to be a hairdresser and makeup artist and offered a mobile service as soon as I got my driving licence.

I always knew I would work for myself, from a young age I imagined running my own successful hair and beauty salon and worked hard to make this a reality. In 1993, aged 26 I opened Chaplin’s Hair, Nail and Beauty Salon, at the time of opening the salon I had never even heard of permanent cosmetics, the skill I am now known worldwide for.

What excites you the most about what you do?

What really matters to me is advancing techniques, equipment and pigments because I’ve seen how much permanent cosmetics and microblading can change people’s lives when performed correctly.

What was that breakthrough moment when you knew that you made it?

The turning point came in 2012 when I was appointed the official consultant and medical tattoo artist for The Katie Piper Foundation. Despite having started my journey into permanent makeup to help a friend restore the eyebrows she lost after treatment for breast cancer, very few people were aware of the remedial benefits. Suddenly, Katie Piper was telling anyone that would listen I had recreated her eyebrows and given her a more symmetrical lip line after her acid attack left her facial features unrecognisable. Both Katie and I wanted to make this service available to others who had been burnt, scarred or disfigured as a result of an accident, illness or it saddens me to say an act of violence. Katie and I began to promote my services and those of my elite team of artists through her charitable organisation and continue to do so today.

Immediately, the media wanted to know all about permanent makeup and medical tattooing in acute detail. What should a student look for in a training programme, what should a client look for when selecting a technician. That in turn led to TV appearances and much needed positive exposure for the thousands of talented permanent makeup artists in the UK.

How do you balance your work and private lives?

It was always my plan from a very young age to be in a position to retire at the age of fifty but it is clear that that is not going to happen (I turn 50 next February) so I have invented my own version of retirement which is that I will only work eight hours a day and five days per week and take a holiday every couple of months. I had dinner with Rosemary Conley at an awards presentation once and her advice to me was never to take my eye off the ball and the first time I did it, I found one of my companies was quickly in difficulty so I will find this hard. I have very good and loyal staff now so I think my version of retirement is just around the corner.

Do you ever have ‘off’ days when all you want to do is stay in bed and watch TV? If you do, what motivates you to pull through?

Honestly, no. As Managing Director of Karen Betts Professional, K.B Pro Permanent Cosmetics Training, High Definition Beauty, the award-winning beauty brand previously known as HD Brows and the award-winning eyelash extensions specialist Nouveau Lashes – the pioneer of the LVL Lash Lift, I relish in the challenges each day brings.

As a permanent cosmetics artist, I also feel privileged every day that I have a skill that can help rebuild so many people’s confidence and nothing I have achieved beats the look on a client’s face when I have restored a feature that they have lost through illness or an accident.

Tell us a bit about your charity work. Why is it important to you to give back?

I find it is important to give back because it teaches humility and the personal enrichment I get from being a part of the lives of such courageous and inspiring people will last so much longer than any cash rewards I receive as a successful business owner.

My most recent affiliation is with Alex Lewis (Alex Lewis Trust), who was tragically left disabled and disfigured by a Strep A infection which caused him to lose all four of his limbs and half of his face. After a 3.5-year journey involving over 20 operations 7 of which were on his mouth, Alex is visiting me once a month so I can create him the illusion of lips and stubble and give him back in his own words ‘a more normal looking face’ so he can draw a line under what he has been through and move on.

If you had one piece of advice for someone just starting out, what would it be?

In direct relation to starting a career in permanent cosmetics the most important thing is to do your research on the training provider. Ask if they hold an open day – this is a great opportunity for you to look at the training facilities, meet the training team and look at the quality of work by past students. How long is the course and what does it cover – be sure to get the detail. Also, what are people saying about the company, look at Trust Pilot Reviews, social media platforms and be very cautious if a course seems too cheap to be true. Permanent cosmetics is an exacting skill that requires specialist training the price point of training should be reflective of this.

Unicorn makeup trend has been going strong for quite a while now. So many brands have come out with unicorn beauty products, from brushes to lipsticks and everything in between. And what’s not to love about pretty pastels, glitter, holographic packaging and rainbows?

Technic is fast becoming one of my favourite brands. Their products are super affordable, highly pigmented and simply work. Needless to say, I was more than excited to test their Prism range, which consists of different highlighters, lip glosses, eyeshadow creams and a makeup bag.

Let’s start with Rainbow Highlighter (from £3.33 on Amazon). This one is actually my favourite from the whole range. I’m madly in love with Technic’s Get Gorgeous Highlighter and this Rainbow Highlighter has a very similar formulation and texture. It’s highly pigmented so a little goes a long way, but it blends so easily and just adds a natural highlight to my face when used with a large fan brush, or if I’m in a mood for a truly blinding look, I’ll use a small and dense highlighter brush. I cannot recommend this product enough!

Princess Powder (£7) comes in a sleek black box and has a mirror, which is always a plus for me. There are four shades in this highlighter palette: two light ones and two bronze shades. The powders are baked so the texture is creamy and they last long. All colours are more on the sheer side and quite glittery, however, if you use a wet brush to apply them, you can achieve a much stronger finish.

from left: Star Light, Shine Bright

Unicorn Cream (Shine Bright £6, Star Light £5) is a long lasting and long wearing strobe cream created with a special iridescent pigment for the maximum glow. I love how it gives the body a gorgeous shine – it’s perfect for festivals or warm summer nights!   This Unicorn Cream comes it two shades (bronze and blush) and can also be worn under or on top of foundation on the high points of your face as a highlighter.

from left: Flash, Supernova Sparkle

Unicorn Horns (Flash £3, Supernova Sparkle £4) is a very subtle yet effective highlighter, which comes in two iridescent shades. This highlighter looks gorgeous on collarbones and shoulders and is easy to apply. If you want to add some sparkle to your face, I would recommend applying the product with fingers, because if you use it directly on the face it might move your foundation or any makeup underneath.

from left: Kiss My Sparkle, Ariel 4 Eric, Aurora

Galactic Glosses are beautiful high shine glosses available in three pastel shades: Kiss My Sparkles (£3), Ariel 4 Eric (£3) and Aurora (£3.99). As all of the products in the Prism range, these glosses are made with special iridescent pigment, so they are great if you want to add some sparkle to your lips. I think that Aurora is the least wearable of the three, because it has an electric blue tint to it and is more pigmented than the other shades, but it would work well if you are after a festival look. Both Kiss My Sparkle and Ariel 4 Eric are more sheer and look gorgeous on a rose lipstick or on their own.

from left: Celestial, Etherial

Starry Eyes eyeshadow creams come in two shades: Celestial (£3) and Etherial (£3). On their own they are both rather sheer, but look incredible applied on top of other eyeshadows. I would advise to apply them carefully on top of powder eyeshadows, because they tend to move them around, but when I tried them on an cream shadow stick applied on my lips, both shades performed beautifully and enhanced the look with a beautiful shimmer. These eyeshadow creams are also long lasting and hardwearing.

If you need a makeup bag to keep all of your Prism range products, this is it! This  extremely shiny, croc-effect makeup bag (£7.99) is very spacious and great for travelling.

Words by Jurga Skeiryte

“How should I style my hair for the summer?”, “What can I use to keep my hair and skin from drying out while I’m travelling?” These are questions that my team at The Legends Barbershop are often asked by our customers getting ready to escape the routine for the summer holiday they’ve been planning all year long.

We all want to make sure we look and feel our best on our vacations. Women are usually better at preparing ahead by adopting a holistic beauty holiday regime, whist men often allow for pampering. Male grooming though is equally essential, from moisturising and exfoliating to getting a short crop and trimmed beard.

So here are our top 5 grooming tips to help men refresh their holiday style and maintain it throughout the summer months.

  • Call in for a haircut a week before your departure. Avoid a last-minute appointment as you’d want your hair to settle into a style that you can work with. Ask your hairdresser for a low-maintenance summer hairdo that you’ll be able to easily care for, as well as for styling products that will enhance the quality of your hair.
  • Invest in facial hairstyling, by trimming your beard or getting a wet-shave. Summer holidays call for minimal fuss, so opt for a stubble if you’d rather not sport a clean shave throughout. This is definitely less likely to irritate and dry out your skin – not to mention a sexy touch!
  • Keep your hair nourished. Hot weather and dry climate spell havoc for our hair, which can end up looking dull and dehydrated. Whereas washing them daily is not ideal, a shampoo with nourishing oils and vitamins is essential to keep your scalp moisturised and the roots healthy. For styling that you can won’t take up too much time, we would recommend a strong hair gel which you can keep re-applying and is easily washed off.
  • Pack lightly and choose travel-sized products. A capsule wardrobe is a must when you travel; after you choose your outfits for the beach, day strolls and night outings, don’t forget your grooming products. Most now come in travel-size packs that you can also buy at the airport; a facewash for regular and deep cleansing, exfoliating gel and overnight moisturising mask will keep your skin smooth. A moisturising cream with high SPF will prevent your skin from drying out. Never leave your hotel room without your sunscreen which you must also apply on your head if it’s shaven.
  • Be adventurous with different styles that you wouldn’t normally explore during the winter months. A holiday offers the perfect excuse to wear laid-back clothing or try an alternative, spruced-up hairstyle.

Woodlands Beauty Clinic is giving its clients a well needed boost this month with the launch of its new tailored IV Treatments.

Boasting several notable health and aesthetic benefits, the Aigburth Road based business (Liverpool) has teamed up with industry-leader IntraVita to offer the service, which has seen increased demand since its origin in 2014.

The intravenous treatment can be used to treat an array of concerns including low energy, stress and illness.

Director of Woodlands Beauty Clinic Alison Stananought said: “IV Treatments first became popular in the USA before moving to the UK, with a number of high-profile celebrities praising the treatment for its notable boosters. Following on from its surge in popularity, we have noticed that more and more outlets are now offering IV infusions, which is why we think it is so important to ensure that the treatment you are undertaking is the best for you.

“Here at Woodlands Beauty Clinic, we offer an exclusively crafted concoction of ingredients, which are personally tailored to each unique client and can offer a range of benefits such as increased energy, relaxation and even anti-ageing properties. We are partnered with supplier IntraVita, which is the market leader in the UK for IVNT, and unlike many of its competitors, its products do not contain preservatives with its focus on nutrient supplementation rather than quick and easy solutions.”

At Woodlands Beauty Clinic, each treatment is administered and monitored by the salon’s in-house medical nurse, Christine Blackburn, and each treatment is individually tailored to its customers’ needs. The South Liverpool based clinic offers a range of IV Treatments including Athlete/Sport IV, B12 Booster, Diet & Detox and Antioxidant to name a few.

Alison added: “Intravenous Therapy can sometimes feel daunting to our clients who may not have tried it before, however here at Woodlands Beauty Clinic, the experience is stress-free, relaxing and is designed to help deliver nutrients as efficiently and effectively as possible.

“Following a thorough consultation with Christine, we will create a ‘recipe’ that’s just as unique as you are. During your appointment, we will also recommend a course of treatments that will benefit you best and provide ongoing support and advice throughout the duration.”

Sessions range in price from £90-£250 and Woodlands Beauty Clinic recommends a course of treatments for best results. A free consultation is available.
