Review: The Alchemist, Liverpool

What is it? The Alchemist is a cocktail bar and restaurant.

Where is it? 5 Brunswick St, Liverpool L2 0UU.

I do love a good breakfast or brunch, so instead of visiting The Alchemist in the evening, me and my friend decided to come in on a Saturday morning. It was my first time at the restaurant, however, I’ve been wanting to go since it opened as I really liked the decor and overall branding of it.

Our first impression upon arrival was that the interior is quite opulent, but inviting at the same time. We were dressed rather casually and didn’t feel out of place. However, you might want to dress up a bit if you’re going in the evening.

We decided to start off our visit with some coffees that were nice enough. We were presented with breakfast menus right away with several amazing options including The Full English, Eggs Benedict and Smashed Avocado & Poached Eggs. I was craving salmon that morning so I instantly chose Eggs Royale (£7.95), which included 2 poached eggs, smoked salmon, English muffin and Hollandaise sauce. My friend chose The American (£8.75) – Belgian waffles with eggs, bacon, maple syrup & butter. The first impression when the food arrived was that the portions are on the smaller side, so if you do enjoy a big hearty breakfast, you might not want to order these particular dishes. It’s quality over quantity at The Alchemist. The Hollandaise sauce deserves a special mention – it was just so creamy and delicious.

Both of us hardly ever say no to a dessert and this time was not an exception. We both had the same thing – vanilla cheesecake with spiced plum compote (£6.50). One of the reasons why I ordered it was to because of the plum compote. I can’t remember the last time I had plums and I used to love them as a child. The compote actually reminded me a lot of the one that my grandma used to make, so it brought back some lovely memories. The cheesecake itself was creamy and not too sweet, which is always a bonus for me.

To finish off our brunch, we had to try some of The Alchemist’s famous cocktails. Firstly, the menu looks like a periodic table of the elements, which is kind of fitting for the venue. There were so many to choose from, including non alcoholic ones. I was in the mood for something fruity and fresh, so I decided to try the grapefruit and apricot martini (£8). It was everything I expected, but I feel like it was a rather small drink for its price. My companion was talked into trying their special cocktail for Easter (we went there the day before), which looked like an egg and didn’t have a strong alcohol taste. We thought it was a nice idea to have seasonal drinks available.

To sum up, we had a lovely brunch at The Alchemist. We thought that the food was delicious, however it’s not the cheapest place to eat at. The service was extremely friendly and we absolutely loved the decor.

Cherry Chocolate

Ingredients:
·      35ml Caorunn
·      10ml Gabriel Boudier Creme De Cacao
·      15ml Maraschino cherry liqueur
·      15ml Red Apple juice
·      10ml Lemon juice
·      20ml Egg white

Method: Reverse dry shaken and double strain

Red Carpet Bubbles

Ingredients:
·      30ml Caorunn
·      20ml Dolin Chamberyzette strawberry aperitif

ELLIE GOULDING DRIVES NEW RANGE ROVER VELAR IN NEW YORK

 The new Range Rover Velar made a spectacular US debut with an exclusive live online performance from Ellie Goulding. The chart-topping singer’s New York show precedes a charity auction of the hotly anticipated new mid-size SUV at the East Side House Settlement Annual Gala later this week.

Goulding brought a touch of British glamour to the Velar’s US launch party when she arrived in Manhattan – the Metropolitan home of Range Rover – to be the first person to drive the new Velar and to sing for a global online audience.
