The Lion & The Fox Salon and Gallery opened by Hair Stylist Tim Pateman and Photographer Leo Cackett in March 2015 is the first conceptually designed space of its kind in Clerkenwell, London. I was very intrigued by the concept of this place and very excited to get my hair cut by the co-owner Tim himself.
I arrived early as I am not too familiar with London yet and wanted to make sure that I will find the salon and won’t be late. I was greeted so warmly (top score for customer service) by Amanda who is the Front of House Manager and expected to wait until my appointment time to be seen, which would have been totally fine with me, but I was told that Tim will be able to see me sooner (thank you!). During my short wait at the gallery part of the place, I was able to have a look at the beautiful images taken by Leo Cackett and some photos from the creative shoots. I think it makes a nice change from flipping through magazines or scrolling through your Instagram feed, not that there’s anything wrong with that!
After my hair was washed by one of the assistants, I started talking to Tim as I was curious to ask him some questions about the style of my hair. I have very short hair, but recently I’ve been thinking about possibly growing it back, but I’m just not sure if I should. I think short hair really suits me, but I sometimes get so bored of it. I asked Tim, who is a very experienced Session Stylist with clients including GQ, Vanity Fair, Nike and many others, what does he think I should do with my hair. He reassured me that short hair really suits me and also makes a stronger statement, which I totally agree with. Nevertheless, Tim talked me through the process of regrowing my hair, should I decide to do so, which I really appreciated. Maybe I will do so in the future (I do like to experiment with my hair), so it’s great that I had a chance to discuss it with such an experienced professional.
Lots of people think that it’s easy to do a short haircut, but there’s more to it than you think. I don’t like my hair cut with clippers as it grows out uneven, so it actually takes a while to get short hair cut with scissors. Tim wanted me to have nice layers so my hair doesn’t look flat and boring – mission accomplished! When Tim finished cutting my hair and I ran my fingers through it, it FELT different. That’s something I’ve never experienced before and it’s quite hard to explain the feeling exactly, but I could actually feel my haircut. I was so pleased! It was also lovely having my hair cut by the co-owner of The Lion & The Fox, because he told me about the idea to start the salon, the meaning behind the name, the employees and everything else I was curious about. Many thanks to Tim and the team for a great experience.
