WOMEN IN BEAUTY: BRIDGET O’KEEFFE, FOUNDER OF BLUSH + BLOW

WHAT KIND OF GAP IN THE MARKET DID YOU SEE WHEN YOU DECIDED TO OPEN BLUSH + BLOW?

We opened our doors at the end of May last year. We started with a team of 6 and now have 13, so we are a fast growing crazy family. We are Fulham’s one stop shop that offers affordable treatments for all the busy yummy Mummies of our area. We are friendly, accommodating all while offering a killer blow dry and a space for your kids to play! Our treatments range from blow dries, manicures, pedicures and waxing to children’s hair up, braiding, massages and spray tans! Part of the reason I opened Blush + Blow was because there are no blow dry bars that do a full menu of beauty treatments too. I wanted to create a space that is fun and convenient for girls that like to look groomed.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU STARTED THE BUSINESS?

I have been a makeup artist since leaving university and started my first business 5 years ago which specialises in bridal beauty which is my speciality for makeup.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR WORK AND PRIVATE LIFE?

I struggled for the first 8 months, but as things settled down a bit at the salon, I was able to leave work at a decent time and start to take a day off every now and again. I have the most amazing team behind me now, which is essential if you want any kind of work/private life balance.

WHAT’S THE MOST POPULAR TREATMENT/SERVICE AT BLUSH + BLOW?

We offer blow dries and manicures at the same time at unique stations that were designed especially for busy girls who only have 45 minutes to leave looking groomed to perfection!  We aim to make this really easy for our clients and so a blow dry bar that offers a full beauty treatment list is a no brainer to me!

HOW OFTEN DO YOU GET BLOW DRIES YOURSELF?

The girls don’t allow me to get more than one a week! Sometimes I feel like my hair belongs to them and not me. I get told when I need a cut and what treatments I am having and when.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

I am so passionate about delivering amazing customer service as well as getting people feeling great about themselves. I am all about girl power, I am so motivated by the thought that we empower women every day by giving them glossy locks and manicured hands. I would love to work with a female empowering charity one day.

WHAT’S THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU EVER TOOK?

Never cut corners. In the early stages when I was so overwhelmed with how much this project was going to cost it was so tempting to use s cheaper option but thankfully “If you think hiring a professional is expensive, try hiring an amateur” stuck with me and has kept me in good stead!

WHAT WERE YOUR FEELINGS WHEN YOU GOT YOUR FIRST CUSTOMER?

I was so nervous when I booked my first customer into our system. I was shaking so much and I couldn’t get the spelling of her name right! It was such a rush thinking ‘OMG, people are actually coming to MY business and they want to give ME money’!

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR BLUSH + BLOW?

I have big plans for B + B in the future, which include opening a few more stores in and around London before going national and potentially global!
